10 Tips on Travelling with a Dog

Dogs

When travelling with a dog, whether it is a long journey or short, it is important that they feel safe and comfortable the whole time. If you are going on staycation in the UK, this can often involve a lot of travelling. If you are taking your dog with you, it is important you are both ready for the journey ahead.

Before tackling a long journey, why not take some short trips in the car to get your dog used to travelling before tackling a long journey.

Tips on travelling with a dog:

  • To avoid them getting travel sick, feed them plenty of time before your journey.
  • Make sure you have packed everything that your dog may need. We have a staycation checklist to make sure you don’t miss anything essential, click here.
  • Tire your dog out before the journey so that they will hopefully sleep.
  • If your dog doesn’t sleep for the journey, you will need to keep them entertained. This can be as simple as putting on the radio, giving them a toy or giving them a treat to keep them occupied. Only give them treats or food if they don’t suffer from motion sickness.
  • Make sure your dog is comfortable, especially if it is going to be a long journey. Give them a blanket or bed to lay on for the journey.
  • Use a window shade. The temperatures in the car can be a lot higher than outside. Use a window shade so the temperatures don’t get too high, keeping your dog comfortable.
  • Carry plenty of water.
  • Stop for lots of breaks along the way. Make sure you stop somewhere that your dog can get out for a toilet break and to stretch their legs.
  • Your dog always needs to be restrained when travelling, you could use a dog seatbelt, car harness or a crate. For more information on dog restraints for your car, click here.
