10 Tips on Travelling with a Dog

When travelling with a dog, whether it is a long journey or short, it is important that they feel safe and comfortable the whole time. If you are going on staycation in the UK, this can often involve a lot of travelling. If you are taking your dog with you, it is important you are both ready for the journey ahead.

Before tackling a long journey, why not take some short trips in the car to get your dog used to travelling before tackling a long journey.

Tips on travelling with a dog:

To avoid them getting travel sick, feed them plenty of time before your journey.

Tire your dog out before the journey so that they will hopefully sleep.
If your dog doesn’t sleep for the journey, you will need to keep them entertained. This can be as simple as putting on the radio, giving them a toy or giving them a treat to keep them occupied. Only give them treats or food if they don’t suffer from motion sickness.
Make sure your dog is comfortable, especially if it is going to be a long journey. Give them a blanket or bed to lay on for the journey.
Use a window shade. The temperatures in the car can be a lot higher than outside. Use a window shade so the temperatures don’t get too high, keeping your dog comfortable.
Carry plenty of water.
Stop for lots of breaks along the way. Make sure you stop somewhere that your dog can get out for a toilet break and to stretch their legs.
